Uterine endometrial arterial aneurysm: Diagnosis with Doppler sonography

Abstract

Arteriovenous malformations of the uterus, uterine cirsoid aneurysm, and cavernous angiomatosis of the uterus are described in the literature. The gray scale, duplex, and color Doppler ultrasonographic features of these abnormalities are well described. These vascular malformations, although uncommon, are not rare. However, only one case report of a true aneurysm of the uterine artery in the vaginal wall has been published. Although the gray scale morphologic features of these abnormalities are non-specific, duplex Doppler sonography can accurately characterize the type of vascular abnormality by its Doppler signature as venous, arteriovenous, or arterial malformation. The abnormality was completely unsuspected clinically and was detected incidentally on routine pelvic ultrasonography.
