Updated guidelines for antithrombotic therapy in Atrial Fibrillation

It has been clearly established that antithrombotic therapy with warfarin or aspirin significantly reduces AF-related stroke. All patients with AF should receive one of these medications in the absence of contraindications. TEE prior to elective cardioversion is a promising approach with a number of advantages compared to conventional prolonged preconversion anticoagulation. Elective cardioversion of atrial flutter should be accompanied by an anticoagulation regimen similar to that for AF. These recommendations will evolve as new data emerge to shape the guidelines of the next ACCP Consensus Conference on Antithrombotic Therapy.
