US has many uses in examination of the extremities. It can be used to confirm the presence of a mass, demonstrate its extent, define its cystic or solid nature, and confirm the degree of vascularity. US can be used to guide aspiration of fluid collections or guide biopsy procedures of masses. More recently, extremity US has been shown to be a reliable method of noninvasive diagnosis of extremity venous occlusion and is a useful screening method to diagnose arterial narrowing.
