Abstract
The evolution of virulence in Salmonella is driven by horizontal gene transfer. This has given rise to highly flexible pathogens that are able to colonize new niches and extend their host range. Tracing the record of horizontal gene transfer can provide dues to the virulence factors that contribute to the formation of new pathovars.
