Teaching surgical residents colonoscopy: Impact on procedure time and sedation used

Abstract

Objective: To review the records on patients who underwent colonoscopy done either by the faculty alone or while teaching a surgical resident and to compare the results. Patients and Methods: From July 1, 1999 to November 15, 2002, one of the GI faculty endoscopist (NSM) was involved in performance of 1062 colonoscopic procedures. He performed them either alone (Group I) or while teaching a general surgery resident (Group II). The records of these 1062 cases were evaluated for age, gender, procedure time, amount of sedation used, quality of colonic preparation and diagnoses after colonoscopy. Results: The colonoscopic procedure time and the sedation used in Group II patients was significantly higher compared to Group I. In other respects, there was no difference between Groups I and II. Conclusion: The mean procedure time and the mean amount of sedation used was significantly increased when faculty was teaching colonoscopy to surgical residents.
