Selective launching of higher-order modes into an optical fiber with an optical phase shifter

Abstract

This paper describes a simple method that uses an optical phase shifter at the input, for launching and analyzing higher-order modes into a low-mode-number fiber having high selectivity. It was observed that in a double-mode optical fiber the lowest order mode was suppressed to 27 dB. This technique can be applied to multimode fibers for increasing the number of information channels.
