Relationship between diabetes and age in human metatarsal bones

Abstract

The effects of diabetes and age on the mechanical properties of human metatarsal bones were examined using institutionally-approved amputated diabetic and non-diabetic lower-extremity specimens. The material properties of younger diabetic lower-extremity specimens did not significantly differ from the older non-diabetic population, suggesting that diabetes may cause changes within a bone similar to that seen during the aging process. The varying stiffness values encountered between metatarsal bones could be attributed to either the difference in the ages between the two populations or the type of foot structure present before the amputations.
