Rehabilitation for Dogs with Cruciate Ligament Rupture

This chapter reviews rehabilitation goals and treatment options for dogs with cruciate ligament rupture (CR), explains the scientific evidence supporting rehabilitation, and discusses the selection of rehabilitation plans for specific patients. Rehabilitation is often performed during the early postoperative period after surgical stabilization, but is also part of the conservative management of dogs where surgery is not performed, or part of the long-term management of dogs that fail to thrive after surgery. Rehabilitation options for dogs with CR include cold and heat therapy, neuromuscular electrical stimulation, manual therapy, therapeutic exercises, and ambulation assistance. Overall in the long-term, scientific evidence for the use of physical rehabilitation after surgical stabilization does not show that dogs that undergo rehabilitation function or feel unequivocally better than dogs that do not undergo rehabilitation. A research is needed to identify the best rehabilitation strategies that will optimize long-term outcomes for patients with CR managed either conservatively or with surgery.
