This chapter first briefly summarizes the many components and sources of mucous secretions. The correspondingly varied array of preparations and techniques for measuring mucus output is then discussed. Finally, the regulation of mucus secretion is reviewed. The chapter deals only with the secretory apparatus of the trachea and bronchi. Nasal secretions and their regulation are similar to those of the large airways (1). Little is known about regulation of secretion in the bronchioles (2,3).
