A rapid, simple method for the detection of localized bone disease has been developed using a whole-body profile scanner and radioactive strontium (85Sr). In 49 patients with malignant neoplasm the method has proved to be more sensitive than photoscanning techniques and the roentgenographic skeletal survey. In this limited group of patients no profile scan was normal in the presence of bone involvement. No false-positive results occurred. This radioisotope method for surveying the skeleton is proposed as a routine screening procedure for the earlier detection of neoplastic bone disease.
