Progesterone levels in the Sooty mangabey (Cercocebus atys) during the menstrual cycle, pregnancy and parturition

Abstract

Plasma progesterone levels were determined in the Sooty mangabey during the menstrual cycle and from day 30 of gestation through parturition. The follicular phase of the menstrual cycle in four animals varied considerably, whereas the luteal phase of the cycle was more uniform. Peak luteal phase progesterone levels averaged 7.3 ng/ml plasma. Progesterone levels declined from day 30 of gestation (6-7 ng/ml plasma) to about 1 ng/ml by day 50 and then increased continuously throughout the rest of gestation. Progesterone values declined from 18 ng/ml about 12 hr before delivery to 0.3 ng/ml about 12 hr after delivery.
