Oxidative stress interactions with polyglycolide particles

Abstract

The free radical production of cells exposed to polyglycolide (PLG) particles was measured to examine the oxidative burst occurring in cells after exposure to biodegradable poly(α-hydroxyl) acid surgical implants. It demonstrated that free radicals were only produced in response to protein-coated particles. The particle-bound proteins were present in a denatured form and it was in this conformation that elicits the foreign-body response. The oxidative burst in cells exposed to PLG particles occurs only when non-native proteins were bound to PLG.
