Abstract

WE show here that non-rotating, spherically symmetric, general relativistic 'neutron' stars of mass ≥ 3M̂ are consistent with the known laws of physics. In particular, for the 'bag' model of hadrons, we find M max ≃ 3M̂. The maximum mass for polytropic equations of state is found to be ≃5 M̂.
