Molecular composition of developing glutamatergic synapses

Abstract

For synapses to form and become functional, hundreds of synaptic proteins must be recruited and precisely aligned at nascent sites of contact between axons and dendrites in the developing brain. Understanding the mechanisms that govern the recruitment and stabilization of proteins destined for the synapse is imperative to our understanding of the formation of synaptic connections, neuronal circuits, and, ultimately, brain function. Despite tremendous progress in our understanding of the molecular components critical for synaptic function, many fundamental questions, such as how these synaptic components arrive at a nascent synapse and what the molecular signals that control this process are, remain unanswered. In this chapter, current knowledge of the mechanisms that govern the trafficking and recruitment of synaptic proteins to newly forming glutamatergic synapses is discussed.
