Abstract
This chapter focuses primarily on nonimmunologic, medical complications after pancreas transplantation that are specifically attributable to the pancreas graft. Excluded are therefore: (i) generic perioperative medical complications (e.g., adverse cardiac events), (ii) early postoperative surgical complications (see Chapter 21), (iii) acute and chronic pancreas graft rejection (see Chapter 22), (iv) autoimmune recurrence of Type 1 diabetes (see Chapter 24), (v) complications of immunosuppression (e.g., infection, lymphoproliferative disease) (see Chapter 19), and (vi) posttransplant sequelae of preexisting secondary diabetic complications (e.g., worsening of diabetic neuropathy, retinopathy, macro- and microvascular disease; see Chapter 23).
