Abstract
Itch is defined as an unpleasant sensation associated with the desire to scratch. This vignette will describe some of the recent advances in our understanding of itch mechanisms. An overview of the neural basis for itch versus pain is provided first, followed by consideration of animal itch models and, finally, possible itch mediators and mechanisms based on human and animal research.
