N2 - The goals in the treatment of dentofacial deformities are to maximize form and function. The maxillofacial surgeon has the challenging task of optimizing the relationship of the maxillary and mandibular teeth, treating any mechanical problems with the TMJ, and balancing facial proportions [25,26]. Evaluation of dentofacial deformities should occur in a careful systematic fashion and include dental, skeletal, and soft tissue analysis. Comprehensive care involves integration of the general dentist, orthodontist, and maxillofacial surgeon in treatment. When careful treatment planning is performed, the simultaneous goals of improving dental occlusion and maximizing facial esthetics can be achieved.
