Demonstration of a resonantly photo-pumped X-ray laser

Abstract

We present the first x-ray lasing in Ti, at 326.5 A, which has been identified as a 3p-3s transition in Ne-like Ti. This Ne-like laser is unusual in several ways; the J = 0-1 transition is the dominant laser line, it has a very narrow divergence, and lasing occurs when the optical pulse is preceded by a low intensity prepulse. We present evidence that the gain on the 3p-3s line is enhanced by resonant photo-pumping of the Ne-like Ti 2p-4d transitions by 3s-2p C-like and 3d-2p N-like lines.
