Abstract
The sedative and analgesic effects of three medetomidine-opioid combinations in the dog were studied. Moreover, heart rate, respiratory rate and body temperature were observed. All tested combinations produced a «sedative-analgesic» stage sufficient to allow unpleasant manipulations or minor surgical procedures. Nevertheless, because of the pharmacology of fentanyl (duration of action) and of the legislation (controlled drug), butorphanol or buprenorphine should be preferred.
