Abstract
The authors studied 78 male and female patients awaiting a liver transplant. Psychiatric assessment included: clinical evaluation based on DSMIII-R criteria, plus the application of two psychopathological symptom scales (Brief Symptom Inventory and Montgomery-Asberg Depression Scale) and a coping modalities scale (Heim's BEFO). The latter is a new method for evaluating coping based on the use of 3 different categories of approach (action, cognition, emotional expression). 18 patients subsequently underwent liver transplantation. The authors attempt to describe the changes in the way these patients faced their disease and their evolution following prognostic variations (poor before transplantation and favourable afterwards).
