A suckling rat pup model was used to evaluate the absorption of calcium, iron, zinc, copper, and manganese from various types of infant formulas and weaning foods. Radioisotopes were used to extrinsically label the diets and absorption was measured 6 h after introduction of the diets by gastric needle into fasted pups. Mineral and trace element absorption from regular cow milk formulas, hydrolysate formulas and premature formulas was high (Ca: 72-86%; Fe: 89-96%; Zn: 78-99%; Cu: 75-86%; Mn: 75-85%) and similar to that from human milk. Bioavailability of calcium and trace elements from soy formula and weaning formulas containing cereals or rice was significantly lower, most likely due to the presence of phytate in these products. Knowledge of various factors in infant formulas that affect mineral and trace element absorption negatively may help when making dietary choices and also when designing weaning diets for infants. In addition, such data give suggestions for possible changes in the composition of infant formulas that can lead to improved mineral and trace element bioavailability.
