Abstract

Aesthetic surgery of the chin is an extremely useful procedure which can aid in gaining balanced proportion of facial features. Although augmentation of the chin using alloplasts can camouflage an anterior-posterior chin deficiency, this technique is not effective in correcting vertical or transverse deformities of the lower face and chin. Horizontal bony osteotomy of the chin (osseous genioplasty) is a simple and versatile procedure which allows three-dimensional correction of chin deformities. This procedure may either advance or reduce the chin horizontally or vertically. If carefully evaluated and planned, osseous genioplasty can provide significant improvement in overall facial balance.
